#7 Rule Of Branding: The Law Of Quality

‘Quality is important, but brands aren’t built on quality alone’

Do we think that the best products out there and most expensive have the highest quality in their niche?

Ok let’s see:

  • a Hermes bag holds your laptop better than a noname leather bag?
  • an Apple phone gets your music better than an android phone?
  • an apple pie tastes better if the apple is organic or conventional?

Sure, we can argue that we prefer a type of product over the other. But is it all we think about when we decide where to spend our money?

Quality Alone Is Not A Decisive Factor

Think about buying a car. Everyone spends time when they want to buy a car. You think about the convenience to drive it in the city. Also, to be equipped with the must haves in terms of safety, maybe something extra depending on your preferences. And you add the brand: do we go for a Volvo? An Audi? Or a BMW?

I think it’s most likely to go for the best your budget can give you. So the quality is not the highest decision making factor. You want a combination of things that you can afford.

Instead of focusing on quality alone, it’s better to combine it with expertise in one field (narrow down your focus) and increase the price.

How To Apply The Law Of Quality To A 9-5 Job?

For an individual that works from nine to five, this translates into being an expert in your field and have a high price. This adds to your perceived ‘quality’.

Would you rather have average colleagues in your team? Or do you think you get ahead when you have an expert in your field? Someone able to iron out any wrinkles on a niche?

An expert has experience and education on that field. And experience it built in time. You can’t say you have one year experience in a field when you only spent a month doing it.

But when you are an expert but you don’t know how to explain it to someone else, does that decrease your quality? Yes.

So, when thinking about differentiating yourself using the Law Of Quality, remember that is a basket of skills: expertise, higher price but also building a name for yourself.

Stop Thinking That Your Results ‘Speak For Themselves’.

You have a mouth too, so you can speak, too. Which, in addition to remarkable results, boosts your credibility in your field.

So quality means having excellent track record and keeping yourself in front of others: on their radar.

You can be a Nobel prize winner, if you don’t go to events, conferences and be around people, everyone forgets about you. It’s the same as advertising: you make sure you’re in the mind of your audience when they need you.

We can help you with it. No matter what level of expertise you have today, I challenge you to use your current role and become know as for your high quality work.

No matter what is your current role today, you should aim to grow it in a six months’ time. Or one year time.

This gives you time to build the blocks of creating visibility at work: build expertise in your chosen field, be seen as an expert in your field, communicate it to others (market yourself).
